There are two broad groups of cotton: long staple cotton and short fiber cotton, also known as Upland cotton.
Long staple cotton produces exceptionally long silky fibers and is known for its superior strength and uniformity. Long fiber cotton is the best for weaving high quality bed linen and this is what we at Homehagen use for the manufacture of all our sateen and percale sheets and duvets.
Long-staple cotton is grown in limited quantities and, according to the International Trade Centre, currently represents approx. 3% of worldwide cotton production
Is long clinging cotton something you should worry about?



Yes!



It might not sound all that exciting, but when long fiber cotton is used to make bed linen, it produces sumptuous sheets that get softer with every wash. When short cotton fibers are woven into yarn, the end of each fiber protrudes from the yarn. If long fiber cotton is used to create the yarn, there are significantly fewer ends of each fiber to stick out, giving you a much softer luxurious fabric. The more ends (short stitching) the rougher / scratchier the fabric (think burlap bag ... a little exaggeration but gives you the gist of the feeling * scratchy *).



Fabrics made with long staple cotton tend to feel luxurious and also stay that way longer. It contributes to the strength of the fabric, so sheets made with long-staple cotton tend to sag less, wrinkle less, and even hold the fabric dye better (so less fading over time).



To reduce costs, many brands on the market are produced using short, fiber cotton. The price of these sheets may look attractive, but what the consumer gets in the end is a sheet that is not as comfortable, has a shorter lifespan and is generally not the quality of sheets we think you should own .
